I was delighted when “Love Life Supplements” contacted me about testing out some of their new Primal Supplements; Primal Energy (MCT Oil) and Primal Power (a protein supplement). As an advocate of the primal lifestyle, these are products I would have been very interested to try in the hopes of replacing other non-primal brands I may have used from time to time.
Who are Love Life Supplements?
Love Life Supplements was founded by Ben Law; a self-confessed health, fitness and primal living fanatic, and recently qualified Primal Blueprint Certified Expert (one of the very few in the UK). Ben considers himself to be a fat loss expert, having reduced his body fat from 12% to less than 6% in under 6 months by switching his diet to low-carb/high-fat paleo.
Ben created the brand with a clear goal in mind – to provide premium quality GMP supplements and vitamins at outstanding value for money. GMP stands for Good Manufacturing Practice and are the principles set out by the Regulating Medicines and Medical Devices (MHRA) which underpin pharmaceutical medicine.
What is Primal Power?
This protein is a unique high fat/low-carb whey protein. Primal Power has been carefully blended to incorporate the highest quality whey protein concentrate with Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT), Flax Seeds, Fructooligosacchardies (FOS) and a digestive enzyme complex to help build muscle and provide a healthy pre-workout boost or aid in post-workout replenishment and recovery.
Each 50g serving of Primal Power contains 20g of protein, 10g of beneficial fat in the form of MCT and only 6.6g of carbohydrate (2.5g sugar). The fat is derived from the addition of MCT.
MCTs are easily digested, as they are sent directly to your liver where they are immediately converted into energy rather than being stored as fat. MCT’s actually help stimulate your body’s metabolism, leading to weight loss and promoting muscle growth.
Flax Seeds have a whole range of nutritional benefits, the main one being they contain Alpha-linolenic Acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid. They are also a great source of fibre and recent evidence suggests they may help to lower cholesterol.
The Fructooligosacchardies (FOS) are used as prebiotics. Prebiotics act as food for “good” bacteria in the intestine and work in combination with the digestive enzyme complex. The lactase enzyme improves lactose digestion in individuals who have difficulty digesting lactose.
The protein is sweetened with stevia only and contains no hidden refined sugars.
I’ve tried a lot of different proteins over the years and as someone who has suffered with IBS, not many have actually agreed with my stomach. I wanted to test this properly before giving my honest opinion so I have been using this protein for over 3 weeks now and can really say I love it. I haven’t experienced any bloating at all, and I can digest it easily, which is very important to me. The flavour is chocolate and it’s quite subtle, not overly sweet or sickly. I’ve used the protein both in smoothies and made only with water, and I was really impressed how well it mixed with water; there were no lumps and it made a nice frothy shake. In smoothies it works really well and creates a super thick milkshake-style smoothie.
The scoop provided is bigger than normal – it’s 50g, and it’s advised that you take 1 full scoop per serving to ensure you get a full 20g hit of protein, MCT, Flaxseed and digestive enzymes. This may be confusing at first, but it has a measuring guide on the side so you can measure out the correct amount of powder perfectly. I was advised of this by Richard (Ops Manager) beforehand and informed that they are going to change this in the future.
I would definitely recommend this protein to any fitness enthusiasts, especially those interested in the Primal Lifestyle, as it is suitable for vegetarians also (but not vegans).
- They also ship to many European countries; It costs £5.50 to ship to Western Europe and £6.50 to Central Europe.
- 1 whole avocado
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 cup mixed frozen berries
- 1 scoop Primal Power
- 2 tbsp almond butter
- 400-500ml almond milk
- 150ml filtered water
- Add all of the ingredients (except the water) to a blender and blend for a few seconds. While it’s running start adding the water in slowly.
- When all the ingredients are mixed well, pour into a glass and sprinkle some toppings on – I added cacao nibs and goji berries.
