Why The Whole “New Year, New Me” Is B******t!

As we roll into a new year, it’s a great time to make plans and set goals for the year ahead. Keeping that in mind, get ready for your social media to be blasted with the whole “New Year, New me” saga and DON’T even get me started on those 8 week challenges!

Let’s take a step back here and look at the big picture, why the hell are we wanting to change who we are? Last time I checked I was pretty happy with little old me, warts and all-(I hope you are too!) Without even knowing, people are already putting pressure on themselves because “this is year that it’s going to happen-I’m going to lose a ton of weight in the new year and my life will be perfect!” When the seed is planted it usually starts with the person doing serious damage over the Christmas holidays and then restricting themselves 100% in the new year! “Hello misery!”


I’m all for people making positive steps to achieve overall mental and physical health but these plans you’re being sold don’t actually help with any of that long term (unless you are working with a qualified professional of course-do your research!). Yes, you will lose weight but is it sustainable? And how happy will it actually make you!

It’s taken me a long time to really be happy in my own skin and I feel it’s my prerogative to help others because that place can be dark. I too used to be that person who said I’ll wait until the new year to lose a few pounds, I too started the new year cutting out all the food groups under the sun trying to achieve that and guess what? It sucked, not only did it suck, a few months later when I started eating all those forbidden fruits, I had failed (or so I thought!).


I’m not a negative person so don’t see this as a negative post, every year is a new beginning, it’s exciting and fresh. Every new year is a year to better yourself from the previous but please be mindful with your goals. Set realistic goals, year long goals, lifetime goals, it’s not a sprint people! Achieving a healthy body and mind permanently takes times and if you are willing to invest in yourself then changes will happen.


January can be a daunting time on social media as everyone seems to be shouting about some kind of diet or new training plan, don’t waste your energy trying to mimic someone else’s goals, again bring it back to you and push forward! Social media can be a great place too- those rough days when you need inspiration/motivation to get to the gym or for meeting like minded people who share the same passion, a support group if you will!

Enjoy each day and don’t stress thinking about the finish line. Enjoy the process, learn and grow!

I wasn’t planning on blogging until the new year, but just wanted to throw out a positive message as we close off this chapter! I wish you all magical, positive vibes for 2017 and thanks to everyone who supported me to date, you rock!! I’d love to hear about your goals and plans for the new year so don’t be strangers!

What To Pack For A Crossfit Competition

As I was drafting my own list prior to packing for the Waterford Throwdown, I thought “Why not put it on the blog”? I can use it for future reference and help some of you guys who may be competing for the first time! I know how hard it can be to concentrate when the nerves kick in (I’m experiencing it right now, being 2 days out from my next comp) so hopefully this list will help put you at ease when it comes to packing.  I’ve only done a handful of competitions myself so I’m no expert, but I’ll share some of my essentials.

I did a previous post in the past over on Boxrox which covered “What to eat when competing?” Which may be useful to you! I found that when I compete, I lose my appetite and can only nibble at things throughout the day. I usually end up drinking a lot of coconut water or electrolytes to help keep me fueled. I also eat things like jellies (shock horror lol) as the glucose helps keeps my sugar levels up. A very important point to remember is not to try anything new on the day. If you have never taken a pre-workout or energy gels before DO NOT decide to sample them the morning of the competition. Only eat and drink what you know your body can tolerate.

When I started weight training it was with a sandbag that weighed 3kg (and that was tough) It amazed me still to this day how the body adapts and you get stronger by the day. Fast forward a year and you could be hitting workouts with a hell of lot more! Lidl will have a whole range of fitness clothing/equipment from this date.

6 natural tips for healthy skin

beautiful-rain-pictures-45-photos-14With the freezing cold and windy weather upon us, it means our skin is having an awful time. Even using the thickest dry skin cream doesn’t seem to work and I get patches of dryness. As a young child I was taught the importance of skincare; most nights I was lathered in Nivea lotion after my bath! This regime has stayed with me my whole life and I have a basic routine that I follow every morning and night that works for me. But there are other points to keep in mind in order to achieve healthy, glowing skin.

1. Remove processed/refined sugar from your diet: When I go sugar free, the biggest change is always in my skin. It becomes brighter, and I get that sought after healthy glow, so much so that I can forget about make up. Refined sugar is a toxin and as the skin is our biggest organ, when the body tries to process these toxins, it leads to breakouts. Sugar also ages the skin and can lead to premature ageing, which is due to the sugars attacking the collagen in the skin and causing dehydration. Try a sugar free plan and see how you get on; after 4 weeks re-introduce some natural sugars and you will definitely notice a difference.

2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: This is the one we all know! Water is so important for healthy skin, so start your morning with some lemon and hot water instead of coffee and this will help to flush out toxins as well as hydrating the skin. Drink water throughout the day, and keep in mind that if you are training regularly you will require more than the average person, aiming for 3 litres.
3. Eat more fats: Omega-3 fatty acids are known to be anti-inflammatory. The high ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in our modern diet likely plays a role in common inflammatory skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, eczema and rosacea. Omega-3s heal the skin from the inside out, repairing damaged cell membranes which helps to make the skin more resilient to both internal and external threats.

4. Focus on your skincare: The obvious one here is to ALWAYS make sure to remove any make up you are wearing before going to bed and that even means before you crawl into bed at 4am after a wild night out! Leaving make up on overnight clogs the pores and leads to breakouts. Introduce more organic natural products into your regime, and treat your skin like you treat your diet, looking the ingredients of your products. Look at what suits your skin type (dry, normal, combination, oily, or sensitive). Some of the health shops do great products that work really well, (I’ll include some recommendations at the bottom). Bring coconut oil out of the kitchen and into the bathroom; you can you it as a face-mask, moisturiser, body moisturiser, scrub, hand cream – the list is endless! Avoid sun damage and always use a SPF 30+, even in winter.

5. Cut your shower time: Believe me – there’s nothing I love more than a long, hot shower, but cutting your shower time and cooling the temperature of the water will do wonders for your body. It’s an easy step to incorporate into your regime and will make a lot of difference.

6. Eat gelatin: Not the Haribo kind unfortunately, I’m talking about grass-fed Gelatin! Gelatin is essentially cooked and powdered collagen. People pay serious money for creams that claim to packed full of collagen to reduce wrinkles. The thing is, it doesn’t work very well, collagen should be consumed internally. Taking gelatin daily will help build great hair, nails and skin from the inside out, helping to reduce wrinkles and scars or stretch marks. I use a brand called Great Lakes and this can be added to smoothies but my favourite way to consume is by making jellies.

Rosehip Oil: I love this stuff, I use it before bed every night and because it’s light it won’t clog up the skin like some night creams. The oil’s potent natural actives make it highly effective for scars and stretch marks and other skin concerns including dehydrated and ageing skin. You only need a tiny drop so a bottle will go a long way.

My choice: Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil-€35 or Kinvara Rosehip Face Serum-€28 (Kinvara is an Irish brand and smells divine) Available in Nourish Health Store.


Rose Water: Toner can be pretty harsh on the skin and lead to dryness. I suffer with dry skin and always find that my skin feels really tight after using it. I haven’t used toner in a very long time because of this, I have a good quality eye make up remover for nights out but a few times a week I use rose water in place of toner. Rose water is filled with antioxidants and vitamins, therefore, it can help prevent the signs of ageing and nourish the skin. It’s really cheap and can be purchased in most pharmacy or Boots store. Be sure you don’t buy the Rosewater for cooking as that is NOT suitable for skincare.

My choice: Organic Rosewater Spray €7.89 (Healthshop.ie) Traditional Glycerin and Rosewater €3.49 (Boots)

Primal Piggy: Highlights and Memories of 2014

2014 was a year of many ups and downs. Early in the year I was recovering from a shoulder injury and it was around April when I started to feel better. This threw me a lot as I was out of action for about 6 months, you can read the full story in my previous blog post here: Learning the Importance of Patience It was a tough road but I came out eager and more determined than ever.

  • The Waterford Throwdown: Doing a competition was always at the forefront of my mind and when the applications opened for the Waterford Throwdown in May, I signed up straight away. On the day of the competition I was so scared, probably not 100% prepared for such a big event but I pushed through. This was one of the biggest learning curves in my Crossfit Journey to date. I wrote a blog post about the experience here: The Journey to my First Competition.

  • Sunrise WOD with the Ronin Family: One of my favourite memories of Ronin Crossfit this year was our 5.00am WOD on Dollymount beach. It was freezing cold, but that was all forgotten about with the laughter and excitement of doing something so crazy!   • My first Interview: I used to be in a band so you would think that public speaking comes easily to me, It doesn’t! I could sing on front of a million people but ask me to speak and I’ll run a mile. When my Ronin coaches asked me to do an interview for their VBlog, I was flattered and terrified! It was great fun chatting away about my journey to date and I think I could definitely get used to this, so watch out for some VBlogs from myself in 2015!   • Yogainz: Yoga doesn’t just make my body feel great, it does amazing things to my mind aswell! My teacher and good friend Claire McGrath is an incredible mentor. In a short space of time, my flexibility has increased more than I have ever imagined. I look forward to this class every week as it’s time where I completely switch off and focus on my body and achieving the movements.


  • The Filthy 150: After the Waterford Throwdown I got working on my weaknesses. I wanted to be prepared for this next competition and as it was a team competition, there was the worry of letting your team members down. We worked super hard together to get ready for this and I really noticed the difference in my performance from the competition in July. That in itself was an achievement for me! We competed in the RX event against some serious crossfit athletes from around the country, it was pretty surreal! But, I couldn’t have been happier with our performance!


  • Intern for The Health Bloggers Community: Blogging has been a wealth of education to me, I have learned so much on this journey to date. When the HBC advertised an intern position, I applied not really thinking I had a chance. When I received the email to say I got it, I literally danced around the house with excitement. It was a sign that I am on the right track. Since I started the internship in October, I have grown so much! There are some very exciting projects launching in the New Year, I can’t wait to share with you!1544444_712785725458680_4194957825723378598_n
  • Kicking Sugars Butt: I am a self confessed chocoholic (there, I said it!) No seriously, I have an ongoing battle with all things sweet! Even when I turned my back on the refined crap, it was replaced with the natural kind! After 4 failed attempts in the past, in August something clicked and I managed a full sugar detox for 5 weeks! Not a huge amount of time on paper but it was the first time in my life I was able to stick with a plan. Bad habits have creeped back in and enough chocolate has been consumed to last me until next year! This Monday I will be cutting the hard stuff out again and I’m aiming for 12 weeks this time.10712781_739163882820864_6250108656314653181_n

Weightlifting PR’s: I think everyone at this stage knows how much I love lifting!! It’s all I ever talk about (sorry to those to have to listen to my never-ending rants) As someone who started out lifting 3/5KG sandbags I am amazed by how your body can adapt to heavier loads and I surprise myself some days! This year has taught me that I definitely want to compete in some lifting competitions in the new year, so watch this space! Some Pr’s this year: Front Squat 90KG, Backsquat 100KG (This was in August,so defo more there) Clean 75KG, Clean and Jerk 67.5KG, Deadlift 130KG, Snatch 40KG, Backsquat x3 90KG, Deadlift x3 115KG.

While 2014 had some great moments, as you know I lost my Na-Na on the 7th December and the last few weeks have been filled with great memories of her and all the great lessons she taught me. These lessons mean so much more when the person is no longer with us. My Na-Na told me I can achieve anything I want and to aways believe in myself. This will be my mantra for 2015 and I dedicate all my future achievements to her xx

Raw Cacao-mel Energy Balls


So I made that word up lol, it’s short for Cacao & Caramel and this is a recipe I am really proud of as not only do the treats looks super pretty but they are also delicious! Since I’ve made these treats (2 batches) I have not bought any other raw/protein treats. I was eating a Quest Bar everyday (Those things are seriously addictive!!) and even if I bought in bulk they’re an expensive habit, along with coffees the cost really adds up. I’m so cost conscious these days as we are in saving mode (Snore) but it has to be done and with that in mind I will bring you more cost effective meals in the future-Two Words: Slow Cooker! But we’ll come back to that another time. Back to this recipe they’re perfect if you’re experiencing the 3pm slump, need a protein hit after training or just want a little treat with your tea/coffee. They can be made up in minutes, so easy to pop into your food prep on a Sunday.


Makes 14 Balls.

  • 1 cup cashews
  • 15 small dates (10 large)
  • 1/3 cup raw cacao/cocoa
  • 1/2 cup desiccated coconut
  • 1 scoop protein of your choice (hemp, whey etc)
  • 2 tbs chia seeds
  • 1tbs honey/maple syrup
  • Pinch of Himalayan sea salt
  • 2 tbs water

Toppings: Coconut/sesame seeds/raw cacao


1. Blend cashew and dates until combined, allow cashews to stay chunky.

2. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until formed.

3. Roll the mixture into balls and then in the topping of your choice.

4. Place in the fridge to set for a least one hour.


-I made another batch today with 1 cup of almond flour (instead of cashews) and 2 tbs of almond butter and they worked out just as good.

-Dip in melted chocolate for the ultimate clean cheat-roll the balls slightly smaller if you are doing this.

Why is it that the most popular posts online are about someone getting “skinny”? We are programmed to feel like this – with countless magazines in circulation showing off which celebrity managed to lose 30 pounds this week, everyone wants to know how they did it, and if it states that they drank green tea 50 times a day, the next day green tea is sold out everywhere!

As much as we try to fight it, we are still made to believe that being slim equates to happiness or success, but didn’t you know we are supposed to come in all shapes and sizes? Life would be pretty boring if we all looked the same wouldn’t it? What about the naturally slim girls who work their butts off to get curves like KK? People are quick to tell them that they are lucky they can eat whatever they want and assume that their lives must be so perfect because of this! People think they can just say “OMG, you’re so skinny” but no one would ever dare to tell someone they have put on a few pounds. I ‘m sure the slim girls are aware they’re slim and don’t need to be made to feel guilty because of this – as I said, we are supposed to come in all shapes and sizes!


Body image is something I feel so strongly about because I’ve been that person. I felt the pressure of needing to be slim, and from a young age I believed that if I was slim then I would be super happy, and that my life would be perfect! I was naturally a size 8-10 growing up, and everything I had I didn’t want, the hips, the booty; I have an hourglass figure and you would think that as someone who loves the 1950s, I would be happy with this, but I wasn’t, and I was always conscious of everything I ate.It’s only when I look back now and see old pictures that I just want to jump in a time machine and give my 16 year old self a slap in the face because there was nothing wrong with me!

Over time I’ve learned to accept myself and utilise my body in a positive way, I have strong legs (not chunky) and having strong legs means I can lift heavy weights, something I love more than anything in the world! I have hips, therefore I rock a retro dress and feel like a 1950s movie star but most of all I am me and that is something no one else can be and I hope you all feel the same! We are all unique, and we all have bad days but it’s about pulling yourself from your dark place and reminding yourself of all the good things you have done instead of comparing yourself to pictures online that have probably been tampered with anyway!


For the days when the dark clouds creep in, why not try some mindfulness? Let’s look at 5 mindful habits to stop yourself stressing and start loving yourself.

1. Stop criticizing yourself: Start by appreciating yourself and all of the achievements you have made. Stop comparing yourself to others and love yourself for who you are.
2. Practice Acceptance: Acceptance is a process and not something we can achieve overnight.It takes real effort and some days you may want to give up, but practicing daily will train your brain and this process will become easier over time. Finish your day by writing in a diary about why you are thankful for being you.
3. Let it be: If you are having an angry day, then be angry. If you are sad, then be sad. Don’t try to control everything all the time. Be mindful that these are emotions and do not define who you are as a person.
4. Be thankful: Every morning and night think of three things you are thankful for. Write them down if you wish and look back on these when you are having a bad day.
5. Create Balance: We need balance in our life as all work and no play, or all play and no work can create inner anxiety over inner peace. We require balance in our life to feel love and radiate love. We need time to nurture ourselves through activities that make us happy.
