Gluten Free Recipes with BFree Foods

I use Bfree products regularly, especially the pitta breads and the chia wraps. The macros on the wraps are really good and are lighter than regular wraps which appeals to me, so I was delighted when BFree sent me some products to sample. I wanted to get as creative as possible because let’s face it, there’s not an awful lot you can do with wraps, is there? Here’s a few fun recipes I made using the products, I hope you enjoy!

Fajita Wraps

I usually wouldn’t buy this type of box as I always make my own from scratch. It was fun to  try it and the instructions were super easy, perfect for busy families. The box comes with wraps, seasoning and salsa and all you need to add is chicken (or chickpeas for veggies) peppers and a red onion.

The taste was lovely but I found the seasoning a little on the sweet side and this is probably down to sugar being the first ingredient on the list. Hopefully that could be altered in the future. They have a lovely smokey flavor which I love and they went down really well in this house!

Tortilla Chips

This is my go to snack recipe if I’m watching a movie or craving something savory! It’s super easy to make (I say that a lot don’t I) But it’s true it can be made within 5-6 mins max!

Ingredients:

  • 1 BFree wrap cut into triangles
  • olive oil
  • paprika
  • salt/pepper

Method:

  1. Brush the triangles with oil.
  2. Season with the paprika and salt/pepper, rub on both sides.
  3. Bake for 4-5 mins until brown and crispy.
  4. Leave aside to crisp and serve up with guac or hummus!

Cinnamon French Toast Wrap

This was a fun idea that just popped into my head. French toast was my ultimate weekend food when I was younger, I just loved it! Even now when I see it on a menu my inner child jumps out of her seat. It’s also not the healthiest foods on the planet so I figured this would be a lighter version! You could say it’s like a french toast/pancake hybrid so two of the best brunch options.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Bfree wrap per person
  • 2  eggs
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp maple syrup
  • Optional topping and fillings; banana, strawberries, blueberries, maple syrup, nut butter, shredded coconut and chia jam-Get creative!

Method

  1. Heat a large pan (I use a crepe pan) over medium.
  2. Whisk eggs, vanilla, cinnamon and maple syrup together in a large bowl.
  3. Dip the wrap in the mixture, ensuring it is completely covered.
  4. Melt some coconut oil/butter in the pan. Then cook the wrap for about 2-4 minutes on each side.
  5. Get creative with the toppings/fillings.Roll up your wrap and cut in half, if desired.
  6. I made some blueberry chia jam for the topping and added shredded coconut and bee pollen.

Breakfast/Snack Sushi

It’s the perfect snack for the kids (or big kids!) it can be added to their lunch box for a nutritious snack. For you fitness fanatics it makes a great pre/post workout snack or it can be a good excuse to practice your chopsticks skills!

Ingredients:

  • 1 BFree wrap
  • 1 banana
  • 1-2 tbsp peanut butter
  • sprinkle of cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup for dipping

Method

  1. Spread peanut butter over one side of the wrap.
  2. Sprinkle with cinnamon.
  3. Place the banana at one end of the wrap and roll the tortilla over and over again until you have a tight circular shape.
  4. It’s ok if the banana doesn’t go right to the end of the wrap, cut off the ends and you can eat them as you go!
  5. Slice the wrap using a very sharp knife into even sized pieces.
  6. Dip in maple syrup and enjoy.

Review: LLSupplements Greens and Reds

The verdict:

I struggle to take things like wheatgrass or spirulina. I know, I should just stop being a baby and get on with it! When I made up the greens: just 1 scoop of powder and water, the dark green colour had me a little worried. The mixture mixed easily, if you have a little whisk I would recommend using it as a spoon didn’t combine the mixture that well. On to the taste test and I was so surprised by how great it tasted, it has a mango flavour but it’s not a sickly or over sweet taste, just pleasant! It definitely makes it easier to drink first thing in the morning!

Reds

I actually hadn’t heard of reds before this so I was extra intrigued about trying them. As you can probably guess it’s made up of antioxidant packed red fruits and veggies. Primal Reds is a carefully blended, high quality combination of the most nutrient dense Red “Superfruits” available.

The verdict:

I love red, reds are my fave… No seriously this product tastes so good, like a berry fruit juice! I find myself reaching for the reds over the greens now! I would say for overall health the greens are more beneficial and I would probably choose it for that reason. BUT the reds are jam packed with so many essential nutrients too and the taste for me is 100%. It’s good to note that both products are sugar free and only sweetened with stevia. I have tried greens in the past but they usually have lot’s of Soy added so I was happy to see this was not a listed ingredient. I know the guys at Love Life Supplements haven worked endlessly to create products that were as natural as possible and they have definitely succeeded in my opinion!

Elverys Sports #CommitToFit Campaign

I was super excited when Elverys invited me to take part in the #CommitToFit campaign! Basically I was allowed to go and pick up some bits for training (Fist-Pump). The collection is packed with amazing pieces but I’m a Nike girl through and through, so that is what I went for! I chose a gorgeous vintage style blue hoody, a navy blue loose fitting top and a funky pair of Nike Pro bottoms.

The staff at the Arnotts store were so helpful, big shoutout to Audrey-she knew all the details about every single item I picked up. As the bulk of my training revolves around weightlifting, it didn’t make sense for me to look in the “running” section and Audrey was able to help me pick what suited my exact training regime.

What I love about the Nike Pro bottoms was how light they feel, they are like a second skin and perfect for squatting. They’re designed as a base layer for competition so they are lighter than normal bottoms. I’d still wear them as outerwear but just to note that they might be a bit see-through. (I always wear Nike Pro shorts under my bottoms when I train so this doesn’t bother me!) They’re more midi than high waisted so that might not suit everyone but they don’t fall down and passed the squat test.

The Nike Elastika Tank has sweatwicking Dri-FIT fabric and a racerback design for mobility. It’s really comfortable and has a loose fit, which is perfect for Crossfit and lifting. I love the low back but that might not suit everyone as you are quite exposed.

The vintage style Nike hoody caught my eye and the super soft cotton material is gorgeous. I was advised that it didn’t really carry any technical features and it’s not dryfit like the other items, but it’s perfect for my style of training as sometimes I need a light layer to stay warm and mobile. The over sized hood is just perfect when you want to stick in your earphones and get in the zone!

Review: Mash Direct Foods

Some days there just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day! Working, training, cooking, cleaning and some of you have kids to add to the mix aswell! If we cut corners every so often, it can give us some time to relax and thanks to brands like Mash Direct, lunch and dinner time can be prepped super quick, with minimal cleaning too!

I was delighted to receive a package of their veggie delights to review in January. It was perfect timing after the madness of Christmas and definitely helped kickstart my healthy habits again!

What I tested:  Carrot and parsnip, carrot, parsnip and turnip, red cabbage and beetroot, and the new gluten free veggie burgers.

I absolutely loved the carrot and parsnip option, made with only butter and seasoning, there’s no hidden nasties. It’s so creamy and delicious, I served it with slow cooked brisket and it was a perfect match. But there’s nothing it won’t go with; chicken, steak etc you can’t go wrong with it!

The carrot, parsnip and turnip has more of an earthy flavour. I’m not a huge fan of turnip usually but it was more palatable mixed with the carrot and parsnip. It’s a great way to get more veggies in and just like the other option it’s only blended with butter and seasoning, making is super clean and tasty!

It was great to try something different like the beetroot and red cabbage, a side dish packed full of antioxidants! It made a yummy addition to the Sunday dinner and if I’m honest I wasn’t sure at first but then I couldn’t stop eating it, it definitely doesn’t lack flavour! I will definitely pick this up again!

As most of you know I was a veggie for 10 years so I’ve eaten my fair share of veggie burgers! The mash direct version are made with freshly steam cooked potato, broccoli, carrot, cauliflower, spring cabbage & parsnip coated in a golden gluten free coating. They were absolutely delicious, so full of natural flavours and one burger was really filling. I cooked them for lunch and it made a nice change to what I usually have!

When I used to eat a paleo diet, I would always try to only make EVERYTHING myself! This would lead to stressful moments of staying up late just to make food for the following day, or finding myself stuck in situations where I need to fuel up before I head to training! Most of the time I over consumed food like nuts or nut butters as that was all I had available!

I don’t eat a paleo diet anymore but thanks to companies like Mash Direct who make clean food with no crap added. It’s a convenient food that you can grab on the way home from the gym/work etc and be comfortable knowing you are getting clean whole foods into the diet!

All the products are available in most supermarkets, so pick some up on your next shopping trip and save yourself time in the kitchen!

Review: OSIUS Bone Broth

As an Brand Ambassador for Love Life Supplements I got to review the delicious Osius Bone Both recently. I was so excited about this as I love bone broth but also because I was the only person in Ireland to try it. This is because it’s usually delivered frozen in the UK. The product defrosted on its way to me but it just meant I had to use it within 5 days, not a problem at all for this Piggy!

About Osius Bone Broth

Made on a small farm in the rural county of Herefordshire. The broth is 100% organic and pasture fed. The marrow & knuckle bones simmer for 24-36 hours to extract all the nutrients. The organic vegetables & herbs are added for the last 4 hours of cooking bring it all together and then seaweed used as the seasoning agent.
The broth is grain free, dairy free, salt free, additive and preservative free.

My Thoughts:

I reviewed both flavours: Chicken with Herbs/ Beef with seaweed.

Chicken: I had the chicken in the morning in place of my regular coffee, it was warming and also perked me up a bit. I loved how clean the broth tasted, nothing bad added just pure nutrients. It has a very delicate flavour meaning it wouldn’t over power any stew or recipes you wanted to add it to. I added it to lots of recipes like stir fries, roasted sweet potatoes etc and it really boosted the flavours.

Beef: The beef was delicious, I love the addition of seaweed it gave it a slight miso flavour. The beef has a little more depth than the chicken which would be expected as it’s a bigger animal with bigger bones! Again I drank this as it was and also added it in many of my recipes. You all must try veggies stir-fried with bone broth as it’s a game changer!

Crobar: A Protein Bar With A Difference

I love trying new things, so I was excited when Christine Spliid from Crobar contacted me to try her bars! So what makes these bar so unique? Well, they are in fact made from crickets, yes crickets!! The bars are the first ever natural protein bar available on this side of the water to be made from cricket flour.

Why eat insects?

  • Crickets contain more than twice as much iron as spinach and high levels of B12.
  • Omit 80 times less CO2, and require significantly less water than cattle rearing.
  • High in natural protein, as high as beef. They also contain 9 essential amino acids making them a complete source of protein.
  • Less food waste, people eat crickets whole.
  • Extremely sustainable.

As you can see there are great reasons to include crickets in your diet if you are brave enough!

The Bars

The bars weigh in at 40g and are available in 2 flavours; Cacao & Chia and Peanut Crunch. I got to try both!

Cacao & Chia Ingredients

Cashews (22.8%), Sunflower Seeds (17.3%), Sultanas (13%), Dates (10.4%), Chia Seeds (7.3%), Goji Berries (7.3%), Cricket Flour (6%), Cranberries (5.9%), Cacao Powder (5.4%), Humectant Glycerol, Pineapple Juice, and Cacao Butter (1%)

Peanut Crunch Ingredients (My favourite!)

Peanuts (37.4%), Sultanas (31.2%), Dates (12.5%), Sunflower Seeds (10.4%), Cricket Flour (6%), Humectant: Glycerol

I won’t lie, part of me was expecting some legs or antenna sticking out of the bars! When I opened the wrapper they looked like  a normal raw bar. A mixture of dates, nuts and seeds, nothing unusual! The bar wasn’t too sweet considering it has dates and fruit added, It tastes very natural and raw. I was a surprised to see how little cricket flour is added (6%) but the flavour was still there. I could definitely taste something different and that was the cricket flour I’m guessing! It’s not overpowering at all so don’t let that turn you off!

Where to Buy

You can buy CROBAR direct from the the CROBAR website. They’re not cheap though, the boxes come in sizes of 8 bars for £18.00 (€24) which works out at £2.25 (€3.10) per bar.

Verdict

I was really impressed with overall flavour and texture of the bars. They would make a great pre/post workout snack if you were looking for a carb hit! They’re not something I would eat everyday as they are a little high in natural sugars but definitely great snack for your hand/man bag! You can also buy packets of the cricket flour for £7 and you can use it for baking or mixed into raw recipes! I reckon that will be for the hardcore fans as there won’t be anything to hide the flavour!

Review-Taco Taco, Dublin 2

unnamed (3)When I heard there was a new Mexican restaurant in town I had to try it! I know there’s been a lot of noise around this place as it’s from the guys behind  #Bruchofchampions at the super popular San Lorenzos! I figured the best time to try it out would be a date night with Mr PP as he had been working away in India for almost 2 weeks and this would be the perfect place for a good catch up! I had heard about crazy queues and long waiting times (they don’t take reservations) but I think we arrived at the perfect time, about 17.30.

It’s laid out in what was previously Odessa and it looks similar but much brighter & fun, It’s all very Kool & The Gang! We were greeted by a very friendly face at the door who seated us straight away and our waitress was over with the menus and to take our drinks order… unnamed (9)

With the theme of the meal I knew I had to try the Margarita, and at €11 a pop I had big expectations and it did not disappoint – it was fresh, tart and the rim of the glass was rolled in sea-salt and lime zest so my pallet was dancing around with the flavours.

It took me so long to choose my food the waitress came over twice but it was third time lucky; there was just so much to choose from and the menu was very exciting in my opinion. In the end I chose the American jerk chicken with avocado salsa, iceberg lettuce, red pepper mayo, fried chorizo and shaved coconut, and I knew I had to put the sweet Potato fries w/ sumac, chilli & pomegranate to the test. I know good sweet potato fries when I see (taste) them!

As we were one of the first in the restaurant, our food came out very quickly and the first thing I noticed was the colours, really fresh and exciting. I couldn’t wait to get stuck in! The dish come with 3 soft floury tacos, packed with huge chunks of tender chicken and all the works. The flavours worked together so well, the chicken was very spicy but was balanced by the avocado & red pepper sauces that accompanied it. I struggled to finish the third taco, the portions are pretty big in my opinion!

Mr PP went for the Coca-Cola slow cooked pulled pork shoulder with pineapple & green chilli, pickled red onion, Chinese cabbage and sour cream and a side of the poutine fries with smokey bacon, black pepper sauce and mozzarella. Poutine Fries is actually Canadian street food and looked too interesting not to try. I didn’t try his pulled pork (although it looked delish) but the fries were very tasty, like curls of potatoes, that reminded me of those “Snax” crisps  to look at at. The flavour combo was really unique but worked well.
unnamed (13) Although the desserts looked amazing, we were stuffed so defo gonna skip the sides next time to safe room- salted caramel popcorn with peanut butter ice-cream has my name all over it! Instead I finished off the meal with another Margarita which was just as amazing as the first. unnamed (8) The verdict: Super FRIENDLY staff, GREAT tunes, a MOUTHWATERING menu and good value for what you get (there are good deals also) – I will definitely be getting my fill of tacos this Summer!
