Are You Ready To Get Your Hands Dirty?

Competitions are a scary thing no matter what sport you are involved in! People fear the unknown or worry that they might bomb, it happens to us all. My advice for anyone who feels like this? Get involved in a team comp! How does a team comp differ to an individual? You can work to your strengths and have a constant support group but remember competitions are not supposed to be easy, it’s about getting out of your comfort zone and pushing yourself past your expectations.

I’ve watched the Filthy grow over the last few years and my god, has it grown! I competed in 2014 in Crossfit Swords with my legends from Ronin Crossfit. Team training is amazing as you rely on each other so much and the same goes for when you’re on the floor and they’re shouting your name, it sends your adrenaline through the roof. You’ll never want to let your teammates down either so will push yourself more than you ever have before.

Last year we were registered to go again but one of our teammates got injured and we were out of the game! I still wanted to be part of the action so I volunteered and was on the scoring team! My first thoughts walking up to the new venue was “Holy S*** it was gigantic”, my second feeling was “How I wish I was competing”. You could feel the adrenaline as soon as you walked inside with competitors eyeing up the competition. I could go on and give my best David Attenborough impression now but I think you get the picture!

It still amazes me how much Crossfit has evolved in the last 6 years from small in-house competitions to a jam packed stadium, people came from all over the country to see what this “crossfit thing” was all about and I’m sure they were running (for time of course) back to their local box to sign up after the weekend because it was that exciting!

My two experiences of the Filthy were very different but equally as exhausting. Groups of people put themselves forward as volunteers to be part of the action and help in anyway possible. Hats off to the judges especially; the concentration, the confrontations, the screaming- these guys give 110% every time, so remember to give them as much kudos as they give you!

It’s not long until 2016’s event and I cannot wait! My training has been very different this year as I’ve focused more on weightlifting and bodybuilding with Wods thrown in every now and again for good measure! I’m loving it and I know these team competitions mean I can work to my strengths. I reckon I’ll only compete in this category for the time being as I find the experience much more enjoyable than an individual competition.

If you haven’t competed before then a team competition is a great way to start, it’s better when you can share the nerves and as the clock is counting down and your buddies hand is on your shoulder there really is no better feeling!

For now it’s time to dig deep and get your hands dirty, train hard and I’ll see you all in September.

Tuesdays Thoughts!

Transformation Tuesday- I’ll keep it short and snappy!

A transformation doesn’t always have to be about aesthetics!I think my biggest transformation to date has been my mind & how comfortable I am with my body now! The picture on the left is from 5 years ago when I just started this (fitness) journey, in it I see a young vulnerable lady with crappy confidence! In the picture on the right I see a confident woman who knows what she wants! Growing up, I always wanted to be the woman on the right but I never thought I’d get there, I was destined to just be another self-hater!!

When I started weightlifting I honestly felt invincible, knowing what my body can do with such heavy weights was mind-blowing and it helped me love my “strong” body! Surrounding myself with positive ambitious legends also helped too!

Spiced Baked Oats With Lemon Greek Yogurt

I should really call this recipe “Breakfast Cake” because that’s what it tastes like! With the colder weather creeping in, it’s time to turn to warming and hearty breakfasts. I made this recipe at night so it was ready for the following morning. It’s a recipe you can include in your Sunday prep and will last for the week ahead (if cut into quarters!) The alternative is that you can eat it as a snack on the go, similar to a flapjack! You may also enjoy my Spiced Pumpkin & Fig Baked Oats.

Let’s get down to Business shall we?

Ingredients:

Baked oats:

– 1 1/2 cups of certified gluten free oats (or any oats)
– 1 cup almond milk
– 2 egg whites
– 1/4 coconut palm sugar (can be replaced with maple, honey etc)
– 1tsp pure vanilla extract
– 1 tsp ground cinnamon
– 1/2 tsp ground ginger
– 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
-1/2 tsp baking powder
– pinch of salt
– 1/3 cup of dark chocolate chips

Topping:

– 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt
– 1 tsp lemon honey

Method:
1. Preheat oven to 180 and lightly grease your baking dish with butter or coconut oil. My tin is about 6 inches.
2. In a large bowl combine all the dry ingredients. In a blender combine the wet ingredients- blend for 15 seconds until smooth. Pour the wet mix into the dry mix and stir until evenly combined. Stir in the chocolate chips.
3. Pour mixture into prepared dish and smooth out with a spoon, bake for 20-25 minutes.
4. Remove from oven and let sit for 10 mins and serve with the yogurt. It can even be cut up into slices/squares and stored in the fridge for breakfast on the go.

For vegans: Leave out eggs, add top with coconut cream as stated above.

For extra Protein: Add protein of your choice.

Tips: You can also add different nuts & seeds, dried fruit etc

My Skin Care Routine

I am a skin care addict!! If you name a brand of moisturiser you can be sure I’ve probably tested it! Growing up I didn’t have much interest in make up, I would spend all my wages on cleanser, toners, moisturisers instead. I guess this comes from my own Mother who used to lather us up in moisturiser as she did her night time ritual!

I tend to go for the natural/holistic brands and I never use a brand religiously, I change it up all the time so this list is only what I am using at the moment!

Morning:

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water: You can pick this up in Pennys for only €4.50 and it’s a great all rounder. I use it most days and it’s great for taking off make-up (even stubborn eye make-up) the great thing about the micellar water is it’s suitable for all skin types, even those with sensitive skin! This product is also so much better than using baby wipes after a night out, so there’ll be no excuses for forgetting to take the make up off now!

garnier_skin_naturals_micellar_cleansing_water_400ml-e1414078143998No7 Beautiful Skin Radiance Exfoliator €10.50 (Boots) I use this scrub 2-3 times a week and it’s nice and gentle on the skin, my skin tends to get quite dry so this works really well and doesn’t dry my skin out like some of the other scrubs on the market.

dry-radiance-exfoliator_500x500REN Vita Mineral Daily Supplement Moisturising Cream €26 (Arnotts) I love this moisturiser so much! It’s  provides so much nourishment and moisture to my dry skin and it smells amazing! My only negative with this product is that there is no SPF but they do claim that it’s packed with powerful antioxidants, trace elements and vitamins further protect and energise the skin. I love how soft and bright it makes my skin look!

REN_Daily_Supplement_Moisturising_Cream_50ml_1395657419No7 Early Defence Day Cream €24.95 (Boots) I use this every other day as I love that it’s aimed at the 20-35 age group.  Not only does it contains an SPF 15 to protect from the harmful UVA rays but also Lipopeptides and Vitamin A help reduce the appearance of fine lines. The cream itself is really light and is easily absorbed by the skin. It’s not on the market that long but I am really impressed with it!

Evening

  • I would apply the micellar water again especially if I have eye-liner or mascara on. I don’t really wear foundation during the day, I keep it for nights outs! I occasionally use a BB Cream or just a bit of concealer under my eyes if I’m feeling tired.

Traditional Glycerin and Rosewater €3.49 (Boots): I use this as a toner and it’s lovely and rich and makes my skin feel nourished, especially in winter. It’s such a bargain too but may not suit those with oily skin.

10130117Kiehls Midnight Recovery Concentrate €42.50 (Arnotts) This is an investment to your daily routine and I know it may seem expensive, but you only need to use 3 drops per night so it last a very long time. I am in love with this product,the key ingredients including squalane (a skin-healing botanical lipid), evening primrose oil and lavender oil calm and moisturise the skin overnight giving you that “I’ve slept for 8 hours” look! The scent is my favourite part and because it’s lavender based is good for helping you drift off to the land of nod! I would suggest asking for a sample at any Kiehls counter before forking out, just in-case you don’t like it!

Irish brand: Kinvara €28: A gorgeous face serum made with all natural ingredients and smells good enough to eat.

Cult favourite: Trilogy Rosehip oil €19.95/€34.95:Trilogy oil has been doing the rounds for a while now and there are no signs of it going anywhere, it’s known to be highly effective for scars and stretch marks and other skin concerns including dehydrated and ageing skin.

Occasionally 

Lavera Wild Rose Face Mask €3.45 (Nourish): I love slapping a face mask on maybe 1-2 times a month. Some brands dry out my skin but I love this revitalizing one from Lavera, like other products I use the added rose helps to hydrate my dry skin.

Pure Coconut Oil: Yes, it’s not just for cooking! This superfood is so pure it can be applied directly on your skin! Mix together 1 tbs of coconut oil and 1 tbs raw honey and apply as a face mask, leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse and pat dry the skin-Hello gorgeous skin!
