Review: LLSupplements Greens and Reds

As a brand ambassador for the guys at LLSupplements I get to try the new products as they come in. It’s great to be involved in the whole process, even before some of the products hit the market! They just launched the greens and reds as the new year started-great timing as the winter season lingers, we all need a vitamin boost, I do anyway! With a busy lifestyle it can be hard to get your RDA of nutrients in, so that is the purpose of supplements like this. Read on to hear my views of the LLSupplements greens and reds!

At Love Life Supplements we always recommend a daily diet filled with a variety of awesome nutrient dense vegetables like greens and berries, and fibrous fruit and veg is certainly part of our daily routines. But we all know that daily life and training can take its toll on the body, and you sometimes need that extra ‘insurance’ through supplementation.

What are greens?

Primal Greens is a carefully blended, high quality combination of the most nutrient dense green “Superfoods” available. It’s basically an easy and quick way to get all your green veggies in, it’s blended with the likes of spirulina for an extra boost of vitamins.

What’s actually in it?

Primal Greens contains 15 types of greens, including:

  • Kale – Contains powerful antioxidants.
  • Spirulina – Has powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Spinach – An excellent source of vitamins and iron.
  • Broccoli – Contains high levels of compounds called glucosinolates with many health benefits.
  • Organic Barley Grass – Can strengthen immune system, cleanse and detox the body.
  • Wheatgrass – High in minerals.
  • Organic Alfalfa – Can relive cholesterol, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes.
  • Watermelon Powder – High in vitamins.
  • Chlorella – Proactive in detoxing heavy metals and toxins
  • Acerola – High in vitamin C
  • Artichoke – Strengthens the immune system
  • Ginger Root – Good for digestion.
  • Avocado – High in omega-3 fatty acids
  • Matcha Green Tea – Good antioxident
  • Grape Seed – May help with high cholesterol.

The verdict:

I struggle to take things like wheatgrass or spirulina. I know, I should just stop being a baby and get on with it! When I made up the greens: just 1 scoop of powder and water, the dark green colour had me a little worried. The mixture mixed easily, if you have a little whisk I would recommend using it as a spoon didn’t combine the mixture that well. On to the taste test and I was so surprised by how great it tasted, it has a mango flavour but it’s not a sickly or over sweet taste, just pleasant! It definitely makes it easier to drink first thing in the morning!

What are reds?

I actually hadn’t heard of reds before this so I was extra intrigued about trying them. As you can probably guess it’s made up of antioxidant packed red fruits and veggies. Primal Reds is a carefully blended, high quality combination of the most nutrient dense Red “Superfruits” available.

What’s actually in it?

Primal Reds contains 13 nutritious red ingredients, including:

  • Cranberry -Packed with antioxidants
  • Montmorency Cherry – May help to reduce the effects of gout.
  • Goji Berry – Boosts the immune system
  • Raspberry – High in Vitamin C
  • Acai – High in antioxidants and fiber
  • Boabab – Rich source of Vitamin C
  • Blueberry – Great source of fiber and potassium
  • Guava – Great for the skin.
  • Papaya – Contains nutrients such as carotenes and vitamin C
  • Strawberry – High in potassium and magnesium.
  • Bilberry – Good for inflammation.
  • Purple Carrot – Rich in vitamin A and beta-carotene.
  • Hytolive – A 100% natural solvent-free water extract of olive fruits.

The verdict:

I love red, reds are my fave… No seriously this product tastes so good, like a berry fruit juice! I find myself reaching for the reds over the greens now! I would say for overall health the greens are more beneficial and I would probably choose it for that reason. BUT the reds are jam packed with so many essential nutrients too and the taste for me is 100%. It’s good to note that both products are sugar free and only sweetened with stevia. I have tried greens in the past but they usually have lot’s of Soy added so I was happy to see this was not a listed ingredient. I know the guys at Love Life Supplements haven worked endlessly to create products that were as natural as possible and they have definitely succeeded in my opinion!

Review: Mash Direct Foods

Some days there just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day! Working, training, cooking, cleaning and some of you have kids to add to the mix aswell! If we cut corners every so often, it can give us some time to relax and thanks to brands like Mash Direct, lunch and dinner time can be prepped super quick, with minimal cleaning too!

I was delighted to receive a package of their veggie delights to review in January. It was perfect timing after the madness of Christmas and definitely helped kickstart my healthy habits again!

What I tested:  Carrot and parsnip, carrot, parsnip and turnip, red cabbage and beetroot, and the new gluten free veggie burgers.

I absolutely loved the carrot and parsnip option, made with only butter and seasoning, there’s no hidden nasties. It’s so creamy and delicious, I served it with slow cooked brisket and it was a perfect match. But there’s nothing it won’t go with; chicken, steak etc you can’t go wrong with it!

The carrot, parsnip and turnip has more of an earthy flavour. I’m not a huge fan of turnip usually but it was more palatable mixed with the carrot and parsnip. It’s a great way to get more veggies in and just like the other option it’s only blended with butter and seasoning, making is super clean and tasty!

It was great to try something different like the beetroot and red cabbage, a side dish packed full of antioxidants! It made a yummy addition to the Sunday dinner and if I’m honest I wasn’t sure at first but then I couldn’t stop eating it, it definitely doesn’t lack flavour! I will definitely pick this up again!

As most of you know I was a veggie for 10 years so I’ve eaten my fair share of veggie burgers! The mash direct version are made with freshly steam cooked potato, broccoli, carrot, cauliflower, spring cabbage & parsnip coated in a golden gluten free coating. They were absolutely delicious, so full of natural flavours and one burger was really filling. I cooked them for lunch and it made a nice change to what I usually have!

When I used to eat a paleo diet, I would always try to only make EVERYTHING myself! This would lead to stressful moments of staying up late just to make food for the following day, or finding myself stuck in situations where I need to fuel up before I head to training! Most of the time I over consumed food like nuts or nut butters as that was all I had available!

I don’t eat a paleo diet anymore but thanks to companies like Mash Direct who make clean food with no crap added. It’s a convenient food that you can grab on the way home from the gym/work etc and be comfortable knowing you are getting clean whole foods into the diet!

All the products are available in most supermarkets, so pick some up on your next shopping trip and save yourself time in the kitchen!

Slow Cooked Turkey

Just incase you didn’t have enough turkey at Christmas, here I am with a super easy and incredibly delicious slow cooker recipe! I had this 1kg slab of turkey breast and I wasn’t really sure what to do with it, I didn’t want it to go dry in the oven!

Eureka!! The slow cooker, the amazing kitchen tool that I always forget about! I’ve been using it a lot more this month, they are wonderful for low budget meals (perfect for January)!

This particular recipe is really simple, but you can add extra veg in or mess around with the spice blend for different flavours! I have also added in a brunch/lunch type recipe using the  turkey.

  • 1kg pure turkey breast
  • 1 bottle tomato passata
  • 1 pot Knorr chicken Stock Pot (28g Pot-no water)
  • 2 gloves garlic crushed
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp mixed herbs
  • 1 tsp chipotle powder or chilli powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • salt/pepper

  1. Place the turkey in the slow cooker.
  2. Pour the passata in and add add the spices and chicken stock (remember no water)
  3. Stir it all up or you can use your hands to mix in the spices.
  4. Turn the slow cooker on low.
  5. Cook for 8-10 hours. (I cooked mine from 9pm until 7am.)

Slow cooked turkey, smashed avocado and vine tomato/coriander dressing with a super clean wrap!

  • 2 tbsp slow cooked turkey
  • half an avocado
  • 6 ripe vine tomatos chopped
  • bunch of coriander chopped
  • splash of extra virgin olive oil
  • salt and pepper

  • 1 egg + 2 egg whites
  • 1 tbsp tapioca flour
  • 1/2-1 tbsp almond flour
  • salt/pepper

  1. Scoop the avocado into a bowl and mash with a fork, squeeze in a bit of lemon or lime just and season, you can add chilli flakes for a little kick.
  2. Add the tomato and coriander to a bowl with the olive oil and season.
  3. To make the wrap, whisk the egg, flours and seasoning in a bowl.
  4. Melt oil or good quality butter (I used coconut oil) in a pan over a medium heat.
  5. Pour in the egg mix and cook on both sides.
  6. Transfer to a plate and top with the turkey, smashed avocado and dressing.

Hope you enjoy!

Crobar: A Protein Bar With A Difference

I love trying new things, so I was excited when Christine Spliid from Crobar contacted me to try her bars! So what makes these bar so unique? Well, they are in fact made from crickets, yes crickets!! The bars are the first ever natural protein bar available on this side of the water to be made from cricket flour.

Screen Shot 2015-10-28 at 23.55.38

Why eat insects?

  • Crickets contain more than twice as much iron as spinach and high levels of B12.
  • Omit 80 times less CO2, and require significantly less water than cattle rearing.
  • High in natural protein, as high as beef. They also contain 9 essential amino acids making them a complete source of protein.
  • Less food waste, people eat crickets whole.
  • Extremely sustainable.

As you can see there are great reasons to include crickets in your diet if you are brave enough!

The Bars

The bars weigh in at 40g and are available in 2 flavours; Cacao & Chia and Peanut Crunch. I got to try both!

Cacao & Chia Ingredients

Cashews (22.8%), Sunflower Seeds (17.3%), Sultanas (13%), Dates (10.4%), Chia Seeds (7.3%), Goji Berries (7.3%), Cricket Flour (6%), Cranberries (5.9%), Cacao Powder (5.4%), Humectant Glycerol, Pineapple Juice, and Cacao Butter (1%)

Peanut Crunch Ingredients (My favourite!)

Peanuts (37.4%), Sultanas (31.2%), Dates (12.5%), Sunflower Seeds (10.4%), Cricket Flour (6%), Humectant: Glycerol

I won’t lie, part of me was expecting some legs or antenna sticking out of the bars! When I opened the wrapper they looked like  a normal raw bar. A mixture of dates, nuts and seeds, nothing unusual! The bar wasn’t too sweet considering it has dates and fruit added, It tastes very natural and raw. I was a surprised to see how little cricket flour is added (6%) but the flavour was still there. I could definitely taste something different and that was the cricket flour I’m guessing! It’s not overpowering at all so don’t let that turn you off!

Where to Buy

You can buy CROBAR direct from the the CROBAR website. They’re not cheap though, the boxes come in sizes of 8 bars for £18.00 (€24) which works out at £2.25 (€3.10) per bar.

I was really impressed with overall flavour and texture of the bars. They would make a great pre/post workout snack if you were looking for a carb hit! They’re not something I would eat everyday as they are a little high in natural sugars but definitely great snack for your hand/man bag! You can also buy packets of the cricket flour for £7 and you can use it for baking or mixed into raw recipes! I reckon that will be for the hardcore fans as there won’t be anything to hide the flavour!

Pumpkin Pancakes

photo(9)Our ears always perk up when we hear the word “pancakes” and this autumnal version is a great alternative to your regular pancakes! For the recipe I used tinned pureed pumpkin but you can use fresh pumpkin; just roast/steam it and blend.

  • 4 Eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup Pumpkin Puree
  • 2 tablespoons Butter or Coconut Oil melted
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  •  2 tablespoons Honey or Maple Syrup (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ginger
  • pinch of Salt

1. Whisk the eggs, pumpkin, vanilla, and pure maple syrup together. Then mix in the the spices, and baking powder.

2. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a pan over medium heat. Then, mix the butter into the batter.

3. Grease the frying pan with some butter/coconut oil and pour the batter in to make pancakes of your desired size ( I wouldn’t recommend making them too big, traditional American size are perfect as they’re easier to flip)

4. Serve with Bacon, maple syrup and a sprinkle of cinnamon. You can enjoy them with berries and greek yogurt too!

If you like this recipe you make like my Pumpkin Spiced Latte recipe.

The canned pumpkin is available in Fallon & Byrne, Dublin 2.

Roasted Beetroot & Feta Salad

IMG_6612Fresh roasted beetroot is so different from the vacuum packed or jarred kind that you get in the Supermarket. So many people “think” they don’t like this delicious superfood because of experiences with the processed kind. If this is you, then you need this recipe in your life because it’s a game changer!! I know this because I was a beetroot hater until I tried some gorgeous roasted beetroot at a bbq and a love affair started that very same day!

I picked out a selection of beetroot in Fallon & Byrne in Dublin to create a pretty platter for my salad. This dish would make a great addition to any BBQ or dinner party, the colours are so striking that your guests will be fighting over it!

  • 5 raw beetroots (choose a selection)
  • 1/4 cup feta
  • bunch fresh mint (finely chopped)
  • bunch fresh flat leafed parsley (finely chopped)
  • olive oil (for roasting)
  •  2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • salt/pepper

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C
  2. Wash beetroot. Pat dry. Wrap in foil with a dash of olive oil and salt/pepper. Place on a baking tray. Roast for 1 hour or until tender.
  3. Cool for 15 minutes. wearing gloves, peel and discard skin from beetroot and cut into even slices.
  4. Spread the beetroot out anyway you like on a tray, in a bowl, on a plate etc and crumble the feta over.
  5. To make the dressing pour the extra virgin olive oil and balsamic into a jam jar with a pinch of sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, Put the lid on the jar and shake well- pour over the beetroot, finish off by sprinkling the fresh herbs over and serve.
